In the Heat of the Day – Genesis 18:1

Genesis 18:1

And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day.

That phrase, “in the heat of the day,” feels significant. In Scripture, heat and fire often point to seasons of pressure, testing, and trial. And so often, that is where the Lord makes Himself known in a fresh way. Not usually in the easiest moments, but in the hard ones.

That is what we see here. The Lord appeared to Abraham in the heat of the day. Not in a cool and comfortable hour, but in the blazing part of it. I think many of us could say the same. We came to know the Lord more deeply in sorrow, confusion, loss, or pressure than we ever did in easier seasons.

That is not unusual in the Bible. When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into the fiery furnace, they saw the Lord there. Nebuchadnezzar said, “the form of the fourth is like the Son of God” (Daniel 3:25). They did not see that in comfort. They saw it in the fire.

The same is often true for us. We would never choose the furnace. We would never ask for the heat. But again and again, it is in those very places that the Lord draws near and becomes more than a truth we confess. He becomes the One who sustains us. The One who carries us. The One who proves Himself faithful when everything else feels uncertain.

I have seen that in my own walk, and you probably have too.

So when I hear about people going through fiery trials, my heart goes out to them. But at the same time, there is another thought in me as well. I know the Lord has a way of showing Himself in those seasons in a special way. Not because suffering is good in itself, but because the Lord is so faithful that He will not waste it.

That means the heat of the day is not necessarily proof that God is distant. Sometimes it is the very setting in which He appears most clearly. The trial may be painful, but it can also become holy ground because He meets us there.

So if you are in the heat of the day right now, do not assume you have been forgotten. It may be that the Lord is about to make Himself known in a deeper way than ever before.

Beloved, some of the clearest views of the Lord come in the heat of the day.
