Escape for Your Life – Genesis 19:17

Genesis 19:17
And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

The message could not be clearer.

“Escape for thy life.”

Not improve your life.
Not manage your situation.
Not negotiate with the city.

Escape.

There are moments when the only right response is to run.

Jesus used the same kind of language when He spoke of what is coming, saying in Luke 21:36 that we are to pray to be counted worthy to escape all these things. And yes, people push back on that. They say, “You just want to escape.” And the honest answer is…that is exactly right.

Because when judgment is coming, the wise man does not stand around to prove something. He listens, he moves, and he gets out.

But then comes the instruction that really cuts.

“Look not behind thee.”

That tells you something about the human heart. It is possible to leave a place physically, while still being tied to it emotionally. Lot is out of Sodom, but Sodom is not fully out of Lot. And the Lord knows it.

Do not look back.
Do not linger.
Do not stay in the plain.

Keep moving.

Because hesitation in a moment like this can cost everything.

And then the destination is given.

“Escape to the mountain.”

That is not random. All through Scripture, the Lord calls His people upward.

He calls Abraham to Mount Moriah, the place of surrender.
He calls Israel to Mount Sinai, the place of instruction.
He brings Moses to Mount Pisgah, where vision opens up before him.
He meets Elijah on Mount Carmel, where fire falls in response to prayer.
He takes Peter, James, and John up the mountain to see His glory revealed.

The pattern is consistent.

God calls us higher.

Not just out of something, but into something.

Lot is being called out of Sodom, but also up to the mountain. Out of compromise, into clarity. Out of mixture, into separation. Out of a place that dulled his soul, into a place where he could finally see again.

That is always the call.

And it still is.

When the Lord says “escape,” He is not trying to take something from you. He is trying to save your life. When He says “do not look back,” He is protecting you from what would pull you down again. And when He says “go to the mountain,” He is inviting you into a higher, clearer, better place.

The tragedy is that Lot will hesitate again.

But right here, the path is simple.

Get out.
Do not look back.
Go up.
