The Direction of a Blessing – Genesis 27:28-29

Genesis 27:28-29
Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine: Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.

Thirdly, the blessing gives a word of destination.

Isaac is not only speaking over the present. He is speaking into the future. He is telling his son where he sees his life going. He speaks of provision, fruitfulness, favor, influence, and authority. He is laying out a sense of direction. He is saying, “This is what I see ahead for you.”

And our kids need that.

They need more than correction for what they are doing wrong right now. They need more than affirmation for what they are doing right right now. They need someone to speak into what they might become down the road. They need a father, a mother, a grandfather, a grandmother to say, “This is what I believe the Lord can do with your life. This is the kind of man I see you becoming. This is the kind of woman I see you becoming.”

Orthodox Jewish families understand this so well. You walk into one of their homes and they will say, “Here is Joey the doctor, and Benny the lawyer,” even though Joey and Benny are only four and five years old. What are they doing? They are giving their children a special future. They are speaking destination into them. And very often those kids grow up to become doctors and lawyers, scientists and rabbis, because that is what was pronounced on them from the beginning.

There is something powerful about that.

So let me ask you, Dad, what do you see your son becoming?

What do you see your daughter becoming?

Do not just focus on the problems that need correcting. Do not just talk about the behavior that needs adjusting. Lift your eyes a little. Look down the road. What kind of man do you see him becoming? What kind of woman do you see her becoming? Where do you see the Lord taking them?

Then tell them.

Let your son hear you say, “I see strength in you. I see leadership in you. I see a steadiness in you that God is going to use.”

Let your daughter hear you say, “I see wisdom in you. I see tenderness in you. I see a grace in you that is going to bless a lot of people.”

Speak destination into them.

Because part of blessing is not just touch, and it is not just valuable evaluation. It is also direction. It is helping a child see that his life is going somewhere. It is helping her understand that God has purpose, and calling, and fruitfulness ahead.

And if we do not speak that into our kids, the world will be more than happy to speak into them instead.

So do not hold back.

If you see something in them, say it.

If you sense where they may be headed, tell them.

Give them a word of destination.
