A Week That Is More Than Seven Days – Genesis 29:27

Genesis 29:27

Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.

This verse is important because it shows very clearly that in Scripture a “week” does not always mean seven days. Here it is obviously tied to a larger unit, for Laban says, “Fulfil her week,” and then immediately connects it to another seven years of service. So the idea of a week can carry the sense of a unit of seven, not merely seven literal days.

That matters a lot.

Because when you come to Daniel 9 and read about the seventy weeks, this becomes a huge key to understanding the prophecy. The term can refer to sevens in a broader sense, and in Daniel it clearly points to sevens of years. So right here in Genesis you already have a biblical pattern that helps make sense of that later prophecy.

And I like that because the Bible often explains itself if we are willing to pay attention. Sometimes the key to a major prophecy is tucked away in a narrative passage like this one. Laban is talking about marriage arrangements and years of labor, but in doing so he gives us language that helps unlock one of the most important prophetic passages in all of Scripture.

So this is not just a detail in Jacob’s story.

It is also a helpful interpretive marker.

A biblical week can mean a unit of seven years.

And once you see that, Daniel 9 opens up much more clearly.
