Genesis 29:2-4
And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well’s mouth. And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well’s mouth in his place. And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.
Those three words had to sound like music to Jacob.
“Of Haran are we.”
After more than four hundred miles of rough country, dust, uncertainty, and long days, Jacob finally hears the very words he needed to hear. He had made it. The God who met him at Bethel had not simply stirred his heart and then left him wandering. No. The Lord had brought him exactly where He said He would.
I like that.
Because sometimes the confirmations of God are not dramatic. They are not always thunder, lightning, and ladders reaching to heaven. Sometimes they come in a simple answer beside a well. Sometimes they come in one plain sentence that tells you, “Yes, you are where you are supposed to be.”
That is what this was for Jacob.
He had been walking a long road. And when you have been on a long road, little confirmations mean a lot. A man who has only gone a mile may not think much of hearing, “You’re almost there.” But a man who has gone four hundred miles through rough, rocky country will feel that in his bones.
Jacob hears, “Of Haran are we,” and you can almost sense the relief rising in him. The Lord had guided him mile by mile, step by step, all the way through. Not with constant explanation. Not with visible glory every day. But with steady faithfulness.
And that is often how the Lord works with us.
We want big signs.
We want dramatic moments.
We want something spectacular.
But many times the Lord simply leads us quietly, faithfully, steadily, until one day we realize He has brought us right where He intended all along.
That is why we should not despise the ordinary.
This scene is not flashy. It is just a field, a well, some sheep, some shepherds, and a simple conversation. But hidden inside that ordinary moment is the faithfulness of God. And that is the way life often is. The Lord does some of His best work in moments that do not look especially impressive at first glance.
Jacob had to be encouraged here.
He is still not home.
He still does not know all that lies ahead.
He has no idea how much shaping, humbling, waiting, and dealing God is going to do in the years to come.
But for this moment, the Lord gives him a little mercy. A little confirmation. A little reminder that He has not been walking alone.
I think we all need that from time to time.
Just some simple evidence that the Lord is still leading.
Just some quiet reminder that He has not forgotten us.
Just some word beside the road that says, “Yes, keep going. You are on the right path.”
And notice where this happens. At a well. In Scripture, wells are often places of provision, meeting, and new beginnings. Jacob thinks he has simply arrived at a watering place. But the Lord knows this is going to be much more than that. This ordinary stop is going to become a turning point in his life.
That is worth remembering.
Sometimes you arrive at what looks like just another place on the journey, and it turns out to be the very place where the next chapter begins.
So if you are on a long road right now, do not overlook the small confirmations. Do not miss the grace of ordinary moments. Do not think God is absent just because the scene is quiet. The Lord knows how to guide His people. And when He brings you where He wants you, even a few simple words can sound like music to a weary man.
