Kept on the Way – Genesis 35:5

Genesis 35:5
And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.

I love the simplicity of that first phrase: And they journeyed.

They buried the idols. They handed over the junk. They stopped lingering in Shechem. And then they started moving. That is often where the help of God becomes so evident, not when we are still negotiating with sin, but when we finally say, “Lord, I am going with You,” and begin to walk.

What happens next is pure mercy. Jacob had every reason to be afraid of the cities around him. After all that had happened, he knew how exposed his family was. He knew they were not strong enough to defend themselves if the surrounding people rose up against them. But once they were on the road to Bethel, the Lord did for them what they could never have done for themselves. The fear of God fell on the cities around them, and nobody touched them.

That is a beautiful thing to see. God does not merely call His people forward. He watches over them on the way.

Jacob could not say, “We made it because we were sharp, prepared, and powerful.” No, this was the protecting hand of God. The same God who called him back was the God who kept him as he came. And that is still His way. When the Lord calls a man out of compromise, He does not then leave him to fend for himself. He goes with him. He shields him. He puts a restraint on things that would have swallowed him up.

That does not mean there are never battles. It does mean you are not alone in them. Sometimes people are afraid to really break with the old life because they think everything around them will come crashing down the moment they do. They think, If I truly bury this, if I really leave that behind, if I honestly start walking with God, what will happen then?

This verse answers that fear in a quiet but powerful way. God knows how to put His fear on what threatens His people. He knows how to keep what belongs to Him.

That is a comforting word. The family of Jacob was not safe because they were impressive. They were safe because God was serious about getting them to Bethel.

And He still is.

When a man leaves his idols at the tree and starts walking toward the Lord again, he is not making that trip alone. There is help on that road. There is covering on that road. There is a protecting mercy that cannot be explained by human strength.

The Lord knows how to get His people home.
