Meeting the God of Bethel – Genesis 35:6-7

Genesis 35:6-7
So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people that were with him. And he built there an altar, and called the place Elbethel: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.

Jacob finally gets back to Bethel. That matters. He has wandered. He has compromised. He has carried baggage. He has made messes that did not have to be made. But through it all, the Lord has kept working on him. And now when he returns the second time, something has changed.

The first time, it was Bethel, the house of God. Now it is Elbethel, the God of the house of God.

That is growth.

Jacob is beginning to understand that the sacred place was never the main thing. The real wonder was the God who met him there. The altar mattered, yes. The place mattered, yes. But only because God had appeared there. Only because God had spoken there. Only because God had been with him there.

That is such an important lesson, because it is easy to get attached to the wrong part of spiritual life. A person can get attached to church and miss the Lord of the church. A person can get attached to worship and never really press through to the God he claims to worship. A person can get attached to Bible study and still miss the God of the Bible.

That happens more than we think.

The Bible is precious beyond words. Worship is precious. Fellowship is precious. Gathering with the saints is precious. But none of those things are the destination. They are the doorway. The purpose of the Word is not merely to make me sharper in my theology. The purpose of the Word is to bring me to the living God. It is a door I walk through again and again and again, until my heart meets Him.

That changes the whole feel of spiritual life.

It means I do not come to Scripture merely to master a passage. I come to hear His voice. I do not gather with believers merely to maintain a routine. I come because I want to be where He is honored. I do not sing merely because I like the atmosphere. I sing because there is a God in heaven worthy of praise.

That is what Jacob is seeing now.

He is not just back at a place. He is back before a Person.

And that is why many people lose interest after a while. At first they enjoy the place, the songs, the people, the learning, the rhythm of it all. But eventually those things alone are not enough, because they were never meant to be enough. Church cannot replace God. Worship cannot replace God. Bible study cannot replace God. If a man stops short at the house, sooner or later he will grow bored with the house.

But when he begins meeting the God of the house, everything changes.

Then the Bible is alive.
Then worship is alive.
Then gathering with God’s people means something.

Jacob has plenty wrong with him still. But here he shows real maturity. He knows now that the blessing is not in the place itself. The blessing is in the God who appears there.

And that is where life begins to deepen for us too. Not when we become more impressed with our habits, our knowledge, or our religious routine, but when through all of it we begin to love Him more. The goal is not to become experts in the furniture of the house. The goal is to know the Lord who dwells there.

That is the difference between religion and reality.
