Genesis 39:2-4
And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
What an amazing statement. Joseph is called a prosperous man while he is still a slave.
Why?
Because prosperity in God’s eyes is not measured first by what a man has around him, but by what is settled within him. I suggest Joseph was prosperous because he was content. Like Paul would later say, it is not great gain that brings contentment, but contentment that brings great gain.
Joseph did not have freedom.
He did not have his family.
He did not have his old life.
But he had the Lord.
And that was enough to make him prosperous.
Potiphar could see it. He saw that the Lord was with Joseph. He saw that everything Joseph touched was marked by the blessing of God. So Joseph found grace in his sight and became Potiphar’s right hand man, overseer over all his house.
That is the beauty of this passage. Joseph did not wait for a palace to prosper. He prospered in a slave house because the Lord was with him, and because his heart was settled in that reality.
