Prospering in a Prison – Genesis 39:22-23

Genesis 39:22-23

And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.
The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper.

Joseph is still in prison.

That part has not changed.

The walls are still there.
The false accusation is still behind him.
The injustice has not been reversed.

And yet, right there in that place, Joseph starts rising again.

That is worth noticing, because we tend to think prosperity only counts when the setting changes. We think if God is blessing a man, surely he must be out by now. Surely the chains should be gone. Surely the door should swing open first.

But that is not what happens here.

Before Joseph ever gets out of prison, he prospers in prison.

The keeper starts handing everything over to him. The whole operation begins to rest in Joseph’s hands. Why? Because Joseph was the kind of man who worked hard whether he was in a palace or a pit, in a house or a jail. He did not wait for ideal conditions to become faithful. He was faithful where he was.

That is a word for us.

A lot of people are waiting for a better place before they give their best effort. A better job. A better church season. A better home. A better opportunity. But Joseph shows us that the favor of God often meets a man right in the middle of an unwanted place, as he simply does what is in front of him with integrity.

He did not sulk.
He did not shut down.
He did not say, “This is beneath me.”
He went to work.

And the Lord made it prosper.

That phrase matters. It does not say Joseph made it prosper. It does not say prison management techniques made it prosper. It says the Lord made it prosper.

That means the secret was not Joseph’s talent alone, though he clearly had ability. The real difference was the presence of God on his life.

That is why people kept trusting him. In Potiphar’s house, and now in prison, the same pattern keeps showing up. Joseph is diligent, yes. Joseph is upright, yes. But above all, the Lord is with him. That is the distinguishing mark.

And maybe that is where some of us need to be steadied. You may be in a place you never would have chosen. A hard season. A confining season. A disappointing season. But that does not mean God has stopped working. He can still give favor there. He can still cause what you put your hand to do to prosper there. He can still make His presence so evident that even people who do not speak your language spiritually can tell something is different about you.

Joseph’s surroundings are bad.

But his God is still good.

And because the Lord is with him, even a prison cannot stop the quiet rise of a faithful man.

Beloved, when God is with a man, the address may change, but the favor does not. And when the Lord decides to prosper what you do, even a prison becomes a place of preparation.
