Genesis 39:10-12
And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within. And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
This was not a one time temptation.
It came day by day.
That is often how temptation works. It does not always show up like a wrecking ball. Sometimes it comes like a drip from a faucet. Quiet. Repeated. Persistent. It keeps talking. Keeps suggesting. Keeps looking for a weak moment.
Joseph did not entertain it.
He did not try to manage it.
He did not try to study it.
He did not try to prove how strong he was around it.
He would not even be with her.
That is wisdom.
A lot of people get in trouble because they think victory means standing close to temptation and showing how spiritual they are. Joseph understood something better. The strongest man in that moment is often the one who leaves the room.
He did not say, “Let me sit down and explain boundaries to you.”
He did not decide to have a long private conversation.
He did not try to patch up her lonely heart.
He stayed away.
And when the moment came, when she caught his garment and pressed the matter, Joseph did the only wise thing left to do.
He ran.
That is not weakness. That is strength with enough humility to know the danger.
Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:22 to flee youthful lusts. He did not say analyze them. He did not say negotiate with them. He did not say get as close as you can and prove your maturity. He said flee.
Joseph was already living that verse before Paul ever wrote it.
There are times to stand and fight.
There are times to resist the devil.
And there are times to run like your life depends on it.
This was one of those times.
Joseph lost his coat, but he kept his character.
He lost his comfort, but he kept a clean conscience.
He lost his position for a season, but he kept the favor of God on his life.
That is a trade worth making every single time.
Saints, some temptations are not overcome by deeper conversation. They are overcome by distance. By closed doors. By changed patterns. By refusing the second look. By getting out fast.
Sometimes the holiest thing you can do is leave.
