Everything to the Throne – Genesis 47:13-14

Genesis 47:13-14

And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine. And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house.

The famine had stripped away illusion.

When the bread was gone and the land fainted, people were forced to face what really mattered. In days of ease, men think money can solve almost anything. But famine has a way of exposing the limits of earthly wealth. Coins cannot satisfy hunger by themselves. Purses cannot stop a nation from collapsing. And so in this scene, Joseph gathers all the money and brings it to the throne.

That is striking.

The money ends up where the authority is. It is all pulled inward, all brought under the government of the one on the throne. Joseph, ruling in wisdom, gathers it there. And in that, I think we have another quiet foreshadowing of the greater reign of Christ. One day, all things will be brought fully under His authority. The things men trust in now, including money, will not stand independent of His rule.

Money is a restless thing. Those who have it worry about keeping it. Those who do not have it worry about getting it. It promises security, yet it often multiplies anxiety. It offers a sense of control, yet it cannot keep famine from coming. That is why this passage speaks so clearly. Joseph brings all the money to the throne, showing that even the thing men rely on most must finally be subjected to a higher authority.

And that is good news, really.

Because money makes a cruel master. It can dominate thoughts, distort priorities, divide families, and trouble the heart. But in Joseph’s day, the money did not remain scattered in a thousand nervous hands. It was gathered to the throne. In the coming kingdom, the same principle will be seen in fullness. Jesus will not allow the world to be governed by greed, fear, or financial oppression. Everything will come under His righteous rule.

So the passage is not merely about economics. It is about sovereignty. It is about the throne being the center.

That is a needed reminder even now. So much of human life revolves around money. Earn more. Protect more. Fear loss. Chase gain. But the child of God knows there is something higher than financial security. There is the rule of the King. And when life grows lean, when pressure rises, when the illusion of self sufficiency breaks down, we are reminded again that our hope was never meant to rest in what sits in our hand, but in the One who sits on the throne.

Beloved, famine reveals what prosperity can hide. It shows how little money can actually save. But it also points us to the One who governs wisely and provides truly. Joseph gathered everything to Pharaoh’s house. And one day, under our greater Joseph, all things will be brought into their proper order under His reign.
