Scattered by Wisdom – Genesis 47:21

Genesis 47:21

And as for the people, he removed them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt even to the other end thereof.

Joseph now takes charge of the people themselves.

First came their money. Then their possessions. Then their land. And now Joseph relocates the people throughout Egypt. That might sound severe at first glance, but there is wisdom in it. Joseph is not acting randomly. He is ordering the nation under the pressure of famine. He is arranging the people in a way that fits the rule of the throne.

That matters, because man has long had a different instinct.

At Babel, people said, in effect, Let us stay together, build for ourselves, and make a name for ourselves. They wanted unity without God, security without dependence on Him, and strength rooted in human ambition. But the Lord scattered them abroad.

Genesis 11:9

Therefore is the name of it called Babel because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

That was not an accident. It has always been God’s intention that men not cluster together in proud rebellion, building little monuments to themselves. The Lord has often scattered people, not because He delights in disorder, but because He opposes unified pride and redirects men according to His own purpose.

And that thought carries right into the church.

Jesus did not tell His people to gather in one place forever and grow comfortable there. He told them to go outward.

Acts 1:8

But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judaea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

So here in Joseph’s action, I think we see another little picture. The ruler is arranging people across the land according to a larger purpose. Joseph is not merely controlling bodies on a map. He is governing a people under famine conditions in a way that will preserve life and maintain order.

God often works like that.

Sometimes He moves people out of what feels familiar. He reorders lives. He breaks up settled patterns. He places people in different places, different cities, different callings. And when it happens, we can be tempted to think only in terms of inconvenience. But often the Lord is doing something wiser than we first understand. He is placing people where they need to be for His purpose to move forward.

That is worth remembering.

We often want to stay where it is comfortable, predictable, and known. But God has never seemed overly committed to our little circles of comfort. He is committed to His glory, His purpose, and the spreading of His truth.

Joseph removed the people to cities throughout Egypt.

The Lord scattered Babel.

Jesus sent His church into the world.

The pattern is there.

Beloved, do not assume that every scattering is a loss. Sometimes God spreads people out because He is opposing pride. Sometimes because He is ordering a people. Sometimes because He is advancing His purpose into places we never would have chosen on our own. The Lord knows how to place His people exactly where they need to be.

And in all of it, the point remains the same. Whether gathered or scattered, settled or sent, the people of God are always safest under the wise rule of the King.
