Set Before – Genesis 48:20

Genesis 48:20

And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

Jacob was not just blessing two boys.

He was speaking something over them that would carry on into the life of the nation. This was not merely a tender family moment. It became a pattern in Israel. In the years that followed, people would bless their children by saying, “God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh.” That is a remarkable thing when you stop and think about it. What happened beside that old man’s bed did not stay there.

And once again, the text says, he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

Jacob was still making the point plainly. The younger was placed before the older. The order men would have expected was not the order God chose to honor. Joseph may have struggled with it at first, but Jacob knew what he was doing because the Lord had shown him His purpose.

That is the way the Lord so often works.

He is not tied to our systems. He is not impressed with rank, position, tradition, or what seems most natural to us. He is able to place His hand where He pleases. He is able to lift one up and set another behind. He is able to write a story very differently than we would have written it.

That gives me a lot of hope.

Because there are times when we feel like we are behind. Behind where we thought we would be. Behind other people. Behind in growth, usefulness, fruitfulness, or strength. But the Lord is not bound by the order men recognize. He knows how to bring a person forward at the right time. He knows how to bless a life that may have seemed overlooked.

He knows how to set Ephraim before Manasseh.

And I also love the fact that this blessing lived on. It became part of Israel’s memory. It became something repeated from one generation to another. A quiet word spoken in faith turned into a lasting testimony.

That tells me not to underestimate the quiet moments.

A prayer over your children matters.

A blessing spoken over your family matters.

A word of faith given in sincerity matters.

What seems small to us may carry farther than we ever imagine.

Jacob blessed them that day, but the sound of that blessing kept traveling. It moved beyond the tent. It moved beyond the family. It moved into the life of a nation. And that is often how God works. He takes one faithful act, one obedient moment, one word spoken in His name, and lets it reach beyond anything we could have planned.

So do not despise the quiet things.

Do not assume the hidden moments are unimportant.

Do not think a simple blessing is wasted.

The Lord knows how to take one moment and let it echo for years to come.
