Chosen Line, Appointed Family – Exodus 6:20-23

Exodus 6:20-23

And Amram took him Jochebed his father’s sister to wife; and she bare him Aaron and Moses: and the years of the life of Amram were an hundred and thirty and seven years. And the sons of Izhar; Korah, and Nepheg, and Zichri. And the sons of Uzziel; Mishael, and Elzaphan, and Zithri. And Aaron took him Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab, sister of Naashon, to wife; and she bare him Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

Now the genealogy narrows all the way down to the very family God would use. Amram and Jochebed are named, and from that union come Aaron and Moses. What had been traced broadly through Levi now comes into sharp focus. The deliverer and the high priest are not random figures who appear later in the story. They are part of a line God has been ordering all along.

That is something worth noticing. God was not reacting to Israel’s situation in Egypt. He was already preparing the answer before the cry for deliverance ever reached its peak. Long before Moses stood before Pharaoh, God had already set apart the family through whom that work would come.

The passage then continues to unfold the extended family, and in doing so, it introduces names that will matter as the story moves forward. Among them is Korah, whose account will become a warning later. And then the focus shifts to Aaron, who takes Elisheba as his wife and fathers four sons: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

Those four names are not just added for detail. They will become central in what follows. Nadab and Abihu will remind us that privilege does not remove responsibility. Eleazar and Ithamar will carry on the priestly line. So even here, in what seems like a list, the Lord is laying groundwork for both instruction and warning.

It is a reminder that God does not just choose individuals. He often works through families, weaving together generations to accomplish His purposes. At the same time, each person in that line must walk rightly before Him. Being part of a chosen line does not guarantee a faithful outcome.

So this section is doing more than recording names. It is showing us that God had a specific family, a specific moment, and a specific plan. Moses and Aaron did not step into their roles by accident. They were placed there by design. And as the story unfolds, it will become clear that every name mentioned here has a part to play, whether as an example to follow or a warning to heed.
