What Is That in Thine Hand? – Exodus 4:2

Exodus 4:2

And the Lord said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.

This is such a simple question, but it opens up a beautiful truth. Moses is full of hesitation at this point. He is telling the Lord why the people will not listen, why this will not work, why he is not the right man. And the Lord does not begin by giving him a long speech. He simply asks, “What is that in thine hand?” Moses answers, “A rod.” Just a shepherd’s rod. Just the ordinary tool of the life he had been living in obscurity for forty years.

And the Lord, in effect, says, That will do.

That is encouraging, because God so often begins right there. He does not usually start by asking us for what we do not have. He starts with what is already in our hand. Moses had a rod. That was ordinary to him. Familiar. Unimpressive. But in the hand of God, that rod would become a tool of power. It would be stretched over the Red Sea. It would strike the rock. It would be lifted in battle. What seemed plain and common became useful because God chose to use it.

That is still His way. He takes what a man already is, what a man already knows, what a man already has, and He fills it with purpose. Paul had a pen, a mind trained to think, a gift for words. And the Lord used that. Peter had nets, rough hands, and the instincts of a fisherman. And the Lord used that too. God does not call a man and then ignore the way He formed him. Very often, He takes the natural capacities He gave from the beginning and energizes them for spiritual use.

That means when a person says, I cannot be used, I do not have what it takes, no one will listen to me, I have nothing to offer, the question from heaven is often much simpler than we imagine. What is in your hand? What has God already put into your life? What abilities, experiences, burdens, skills, and opportunities are already there? It may seem ordinary to you because it has been with you a long time. But what is ordinary in your hand may become powerful once yielded to the Lord.

That is an important point, because many people are waiting for some dramatic sign, some entirely new identity, some gift dropped out of heaven that bears no relation to who they are. But very often the Lord begins with the tools already lying close by. A pen. A computer. A hammer. A voice. A listening ear. A gift for teaching children. A way with people. A skill with numbers. A feel for craftsmanship. A heart for prayer. These things may not seem flashy, but in the Lord’s hands they become instruments of service.

The key is not the impressiveness of the tool.

The key is the surrender of the hand holding it.

Moses’ rod by itself was just a stick. But once placed under the command of God, it became part of one of the greatest deliverance stories in all of Scripture. So the issue is not whether what is in your hand looks dramatic. The issue is whether it has been yielded. God has a way of taking what He built into a person from the beginning and activating it in ways that bring Him glory after that person is born again and begins to walk with Him.

So if you are wondering how God could use you, do not begin by looking at what you lack. Start by asking what is already in your hand. The Lord may not be asking for something exotic or far away. He may be pointing to the ordinary thing nearest to you and saying, That is where I will begin.
