Deep Roots, Light Hearts – Colossians 2:7

Colossians 2:7

Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

Paul layers the imagery.

Rooted.
Built up.
Established.
Abounding.

This is not fragile faith. This is something planted deep and rising strong.

Rooted speaks of what is unseen. A tree survives storms not because of visible branches, but because of hidden roots. Our roots are not in experience. Not in trends. Not in personalities.

In Him.

Built up speaks of growth. Faith is not static. It rises. Layer upon layer, like a structure carefully strengthened over time.

Established speaks of stability. Not tossed by every wind of teaching. Not dazzled by every new idea.

And then Paul adds something surprising.

Abounding with thanksgiving.

That is the mark.

The Church is a mystery to the world. We gather weekly to confess that we are sinners. We openly admit our weakness. We sing about mercy. We kneel in repentance.

And then we leave rejoicing.

Why?

Because we are sinners saved by a wonderful Savior.

Other groups gather to celebrate their own greatness. They strive for sophistication. They pursue intellectual depth. They attempt to elevate themselves. Yet often they leave burdened by the pressure to measure up.

The Church gathers to acknowledge its need.

And leaves full of gratitude.

That is what happens when you are rooted in grace.

Paul warns them not to drift into pseudo sophistication. Not to trade simplicity for complexity. Not to exchange gratitude for pride.

The quicksand of spiritual elitism looks firm at first. It promises depth. It promises advancement. But stand still in it and you begin to sink.

The antidote is not secret knowledge.

It is thanksgiving.

If your theology makes you proud, you are sinking.
If your growth makes you grateful, you are rooted.

Stay planted in Christ.
Grow upward in Him.
Stand firm in what you were taught.

And abound.

Not in superiority.

In thanksgiving.
