Colossians 2:18
Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind.
Paul now warns of something subtler than legalism.
Mysticism.
It often comes wrapped in humility. Soft voice. Lowered eyes. Stories of visions. Claims of hidden realms. Special access. Angelic encounters.
It sounds spiritual.
But Paul says it can rob you.
Beguile you of your reward. Disqualify you. Sideline you. Distract you from the simplicity that is in Christ.
Notice the ingredients.
Voluntary humility. Self chosen humility. It looks modest, but it is curated. It advertises itself.
Worshipping of angels. Fixation on intermediaries rather than on Christ Himself.
Intruding into things not seen. Detailed descriptions of heavenly realms. Private revelations. Secret knowledge.
And beneath it all?
Vainly puffed up by a fleshly mind.
That is the irony.
What appears deeply spiritual can be deeply carnal.
Mysticism often shifts attention away from Christ and toward experience. Instead of resting in what Christ has done, it chases what I have felt.
Instead of holding fast to the Head, it pursues impressions, sensations, and spiritual thrills.
There is a difference between awe and obsession.
There is a difference between reverence and fascination.
When someone implies that you are missing something because you have not had their experience, be cautious.
If you have Christ, you are not lacking.
The Christian life is not about climbing into hidden realms. It is about abiding in the One who already reigns there.
Do not let anyone suggest that spiritual depth is measured by visions.
It is measured by faithfulness.
By love.
By obedience.
By holding fast to Christ.
Stay anchored.
The greatest revelation has already been given.
His name is Jesus.
