1 Thessalonians 1:4
Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.
Paul does not hesitate.
He calls them beloved.
He speaks of election.
He speaks with certainty.
Knowing your election of God.
Election is often misunderstood. It is not God scanning humanity for the most impressive résumé. It is not divine admiration for human potential. It is not a reward for future performance.
Scripture says we were chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world in Ephesians 1:4.
Before your first breath.
Before your first mistake.
Before your first success.
Chosen.
That removes pride.
That removes fear.
If God chose you because you impressed Him, you would constantly worry about disappointing Him.
If God chose you because He foresaw your faithfulness, then your security would rest on your consistency.
But if He chose you according to His grace, then your salvation rests on His character, not yours.
D. L. Moody once remarked that he was grateful the Lord chose him before he was born, because after he had done some living, he doubted he would have qualified.
There is humor there, but also humility.
Election magnifies mercy.
Imagine being adopted. Not because you earned a place in the family. Not because you negotiated well. But because someone set their love upon you.
That is grace at its deepest level.
Election does not excuse responsibility.
It fuels gratitude.
You love because He first loved.
You serve because He first chose.
You persevere because your security does not originate with you.
Beloved.
Elected.
Before Thessalonica ever heard Paul preach.
Before idols were smashed.
Before faith blossomed.
God was already at work.
And that is the ground beneath our feet.
