Faith, Love, and Hope – 1 Thessalonians 1:2–3

1 Thessalonians 1:2–3

We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers;
Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father.

Paul thanks God not for their size or influence, but for their maturity.

Three marks stand out:

Work of faith.
Labor of love.
Patience of hope.

First, the work of faith.

When asked in John 6 what works they must perform, Jesus replied that the work of God is to believe on Him whom the Father has sent. Faith is not inactivity. It is reliance. It is resting the weight of your life upon Christ.

Second, the labor of love.

Love labors.

In a 1924 Kiwanis magazine column written by Roe Fulkerson, he told of a small boy carrying a younger child who was struggling to walk. When someone asked if the child was heavy, the boy replied, “He ain’t heavy, Mister — he’s my brother.”

That line traveled the world because it captures something eternal.

Love does not calculate burden.
Love carries.

When we comprehend what Christ has carried for us, serving others ceases to feel oppressive. It becomes a response.

Third, the patience of hope.

The Thessalonians were enduring hardship while waiting for the Lord’s return. Hope steadied them.

On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus washed His disciples’ feet because He knew where He had come from and where He was going (John 13:3). Eternal perspective fueled humble service.

Faith rests in Christ.
Love reaches toward others.
Hope looks ahead to glory.

If those three are present, maturity follows.
