Revelation 2:21
And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.
There is something remarkable in that verse.
Even with all the corruption, all the seduction, all the damage being done, Jesus says, “I gave her space to repent.”Before judgment, there was mercy. Before the heavy hand fell, there was room given. Before dealing with her openly, the Lord extended time.
That is just like Him.
He is holy, yes. His eyes are like fire, yes. But He is never rash. He is never unjust. He gives space to repent.
And yet the tragedy is in the final phrase.
“She repented not.”
She was given room, but not response. She was given time, but not turning. Mercy was extended, but mercy was refused.
Keep in mind, too, that fornication here does not refer only to physical sin. Very often in the Old Testament, fornication speaks of spiritual unfaithfulness, of entering into an idolatrous relationship, of giving to false worship what belongs to God alone. That is the sense here as well. This woman in Thyatira, following in the footsteps of the Jezebel of old, was encouraging idolatry in the church.
That makes the warning even more serious.
This was not merely bad influence.
This was spiritual betrayal.
This was the turning of hearts away from simple devotion to the Lord and toward corrupt worship. It was the introduction of another affection, another loyalty, another altar. And whenever that happens, the Lord calls it what it is. He calls it fornication.
Because idolatry is never a harmless side issue.
It is spiritual adultery.
The soul was made for God. The church was made for Christ. So when the heart is drawn away to idols, whether literal or spiritual, the Lord sees it not merely as a mistake in judgment, but as unfaithfulness in relationship.
And still, even then, He gave her space.
Think about that.
The Lord could have cut her off immediately. He could have judged at once. But instead He waited. He warned. He allowed time. That tells us something beautiful and sobering all at once. Beautiful, because His mercy is real. Sobering, because if mercy is ignored, judgment becomes all the more serious.
Saints, the danger is never only open rebellion. Sometimes the greater danger is a heart that keeps being warned and keeps refusing to turn. Space to repent is one of the kindest gifts God gives. But it is a gift that must not be wasted.
Because the saddest words in the verse are not “fornication.”
They are “she repented not.”
