Where Satan’s Seat Was – Revelation 2:12-13

Revelation 2:12 (b), 13 (a)

These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges; I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan’s seat is…

Pergamos was a dark place spiritually. According to Greek mythology, it was the birthplace of Zeus. And when Jesus speaks of Satan’s seat, the reference is to that one hundred fifty foot high structure dedicated to Zeus right in the middle of the city of Pergamos.

Think about that. The believers there were not living in some neutral setting. They were dwelling in a city where paganism was elevated, celebrated, and enthroned. The atmosphere around them was saturated with idolatry and opposition to the true God. No wonder Jesus says they were dwelling where Satan’s seat was. The enemy had established a stronghold there.

And yet right in the middle of that darkness, the Lord says, “I know thy works.” He saw them. He knew where they lived. He understood the pressure of that place.

Revelation 2:13 (b)

…and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.

That is what makes their faithfulness so remarkable. They were living in the shadow of Satan’s seat, and still they held fast His name. They did not deny the faith, even when faithfulness became costly.

Antipas stands as the example. The historian Tertullian tells us that Antipas was a physician in the city of Pergamos, and because he would not renounce his faith, he was fried to death.

What a staggering phrase.

Fried to death.

This was not mild opposition. This was not social discomfort. This was fiery persecution. And still Antipas would not move. He would not deny the Lord. He stayed true in the very place where Satan dwelt.

I like the way Jesus speaks of him. He calls him “my faithful martyr.” Men may have rejected him, but heaven honored him. The city may have killed him, but Jesus claimed him.

That is the message here. Pergamos was a place of darkness, pagan power, and satanic influence. Yet right there, in that very city, there were believers who held fast. Right there, in the place where Satan had a seat, there was a man who would rather die than deny the name of Jesus.

Beloved, the Lord knows where His people dwell. He knows when the city is dark. He knows when the pressure is real. And He does not forget those who stay faithful in hard places.
