Revelation 3:6
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
That is how the letter closes, but it is not just a closing line. It is a call to every generation. Jesus is saying, Listen up. Pay attention. Do not let this be something you file away as ancient history or somebody else’s problem. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches.
That means every generation needs its own Reformation, its own renewal, its own revival. It is not enough to live on what God did in our parents’ day. It is not enough to admire the stories, quote the heroes, and rehearse the victories of another time. Sardis had a name. Sardis had a past. Sardis had a reputation. But the Lord was not impressed by what used to be. He was looking for present life.
That still speaks.
The Jesus Movement of the 1960s was a wonderful work of God. Lives were changed. Hearts were awakened. The Word came alive to people in a fresh way. But we cannot spend our lives looking over our shoulder, wishing we had lived back then. God is not finished. His heart is to move His people from glory to greater glory when we get out of the way and do not fall into the Sardis syndrome of living on reputation instead of reality.
Think about that. The danger is not only open corruption. Sometimes the danger is nostalgia. Sometimes the danger is settling into the memory of what God once did and quietly losing hunger for what He wants to do now.
Jesus says, He that hath an ear, let him hear.
Not what the Spirit said only.
What the Spirit saith.
Present tense.
Right now.
So the question is not just, What did God do in the Reformation?
Not just, What did God do in the Jesus Movement?
But, What is the Spirit saying to the churches now?
Beloved, may we have ears to hear. May we not be content with stories of yesterday. May we thank God for every past move of His Spirit, but still stay hungry for fresh life, fresh renewal, and fresh revival in our own day.
Because the Lord is still speaking.
And those who hear Him will never have to live on a name alone.
