Genesis 10:10
And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
Now we begin to see what Nimrod was building. It was not just influence. It was a kingdom. And the first city named is Babel.
Originally, Babel carried the idea of Bab El, the gateway to God. Man always wants that. He wants a way to reach heaven on his own terms. He wants spirituality without surrender. He wants access to God without bowing before God. That is what Babel represents at the start.
But as the story moves on, Babel will come to mean confusion. And that is always where rebellion ends up. What begins with lofty language and grand ambition ends in disorder. What starts sounding spiritual ends in chaos. Man says, “We will build our way up.” God says, “No, you are only multiplying confusion.”
That is the tragedy of every man made system that tries to reach heaven apart from the Lord. It may sound impressive at first. It may look organized, powerful, and even religious. But if God is not in it, confusion will eventually be the result.
And that is still true today. A life, a ministry, a movement, a culture can all talk about higher things, deeper things, spiritual things. But if it is rooted in pride and rebellion, confusion will follow. It may begin as Babel, the gateway to God. It will end as Babel, confusion.
Beloved, if I try to build a name for myself, if I try to reach heaven by my own wisdom, I will end up confused. The only true way to God is not a tower men build upward, but the grace God sends downward.
