Hunting Souls – Genesis 10:9

Genesis 10:9

He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.

This verse is not painting Nimrod as some rugged outdoorsman who happened to be good with a bow. The sense here is much darker. He was a mighty hunter against the Lord. Nimrod was not just chasing animals. He was chasing men. He was a rebel who hunted souls.

That fits everything we have already seen about him. His very name speaks of rebellion. His rise to power was not neutral. And now we see the spirit behind it. He was a taker. A user. A man who built his strength by preying on others.

That is how rebellion often works. It does not just resist God in private. It drags other people along with it. It exploits. It manipulates. It rips people off. Nimrod was mighty, yes, but his might was turned in the wrong direction. He used influence not to bless people, but to control them.

And that same spirit is still in the world today. There are always Nimrods around. Men who look strong, sound convincing, and gather people to themselves, but they are not leading people to the Lord. They are hunting them. They are using them. They are building their own little kingdom on the backs of others.

So this verse is a warning. Do not be impressed just because someone is powerful. Do not assume a strong personality is a godly one. Nimrod was mighty, but he was against the Lord.

Beloved, the only strength worth following is strength that bows before God and serves people instead of using them.
