Genesis 10:6
And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan.
Now the line of Ham is set before us. Cush, Mizraim, Phut, and Canaan. These names become the roots of peoples who settled primarily in Africa, with some spreading into the Middle East as well.
Cush points us toward Ethiopia, in the region of the Nile. Mizraim is Egypt. Phut is Libya. Canaan is the land that would become central to so much of the biblical story, the region of present day Israel. So once again, Genesis is not giving us empty genealogy. It is showing us where the nations began to spread and settle after the flood.
And what stands out here is that one of these names, Canaan, will become especially important in the story that follows. The Canaanites would occupy the land God would later give to Israel. But they would not be judged quickly or impulsively. The Lord, in His patience, would give them centuries to repent before judgment finally came. That tells me something important about the heart of God. Even when judgment is certain, mercy waits a long time.
So this verse does more than name Ham’s sons. It starts laying out the map for the rest of biblical history. Egypt will matter. Ethiopia will matter. Libya will matter. Canaan will matter. These names will keep showing up because the Lord is already setting the stage for what is still to come.
Beloved, even in a verse like this, we see that God is patient, God is purposeful, and God is already moving history toward His plan.
