Certainly I Will Be with Thee – Exodus 3:12

Exodus 3:12

And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.

Moses has just asked the question that rises so naturally in a man who has been humbled by the Lord: “Who am I?” And God’s answer is so beautiful because He does not begin by building Moses up in himself. He does not say, Moses, you are stronger than you think. He does not say, Moses, you have more talent than you realize. He simply says, in effect, It is not really about who you are. It is about the fact that I will be with you.

That is always the answer.

When the Lord calls a man, the great issue is never the sufficiency of the man. It is the presence of God. Moses felt his weakness, and rightly so. He knew he was inadequate for such a task. But God did not remove that sense by telling him to trust in himself more. He removed it by giving him the one promise that makes all the difference: “Certainly I will be with thee.”

That changes everything.

A weak man with the presence of God is stronger than the most gifted man left to himself. Moses did not need more self confidence. He needed assurance that God would not leave him to carry the burden alone. And that is exactly what the Lord gave him. The One sending him would also go with him. The One commissioning him would also sustain him. The One calling him to Pharaoh would not stand at a distance while Moses tried to work it all out. God Himself would be with him.

Then the Lord gives him a token, but it is interesting that the sign is future, not immediate. He says, “When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.” In other words, Moses, you will know that I sent you because one day you will be back here again, not alone, not as a shepherd in Midian, but with a redeemed people worshiping Me on this very mountain. Horeb, which is Sinai, would one day be filled with the congregation of Israel standing before the Lord. The lonely mountain of Moses’ obscurity would become the meeting place of a delivered nation.

That is how God often strengthens faith. He gives a promise that can only be understood fully on the other side of obedience. Moses is being told, You will see. You will know. The day will come when this word will be confirmed before your eyes. But first he has to go. First he has to trust. First he has to move forward resting not in visible proof, but in the promise of God.

There is a real lesson in that. We often want the token beforehand. We want the whole path explained, the whole outcome guaranteed, the whole future laid out in neat order. But many times the Lord says, Go with My promise, and later you will see the confirmation. Walk by faith now, and understanding will come further down the road. Moses is not given all the details. He is given the presence of God and the promise of eventual confirmation.

And really, that is enough.

If the Lord is with a man, that man has everything he needs for the calling before him. He may still feel weak. He may still tremble. He may still not know how all of it will unfold. But the promise of God’s presence outweighs all of that. Moses asked, “Who am I?” God answered, in essence, You are the man I am with. And in the end, that is the only answer that matters.
